BREAKING NEWS: AZ State Board of Education Gets an Earful from Parents, Leaves Sex Ed Policy to Legislators

Members of Arizona’s State Board of Education made the right call this afternoon, leaving sex education policy to legislators. The board refused to move forward on recommendations that could have led to extreme sex education curriculum.

More than 60 people, mostly concerned parents, spoke before the board in opposition to the recommendations, successfully urging members to keep the current sex education rules applicable to district and charter schools.

CAP’s VP of Policy & General Counsel, Michael Clark, testified there is no obvious reason why the rules should be changed and that sex education policy should be left to members of the Arizona legislature — those elected to represent the interests of parents and children in their legislative districts.

Against common sense, the recommended changes included allowing co-ed sex education classes. But perhaps most concerning, the recommendations would have allowed virtually any type of sexual act or practice to be taught to children in public schools.

Center for Arizona Policy has always stood for a parent’s fundamental right to direct the education of their children, especially when it comes to the sensitive issue of sex education.
